Story so far

From a Red born in the mines to the Gold who toppled the Institute, lit the Rising, and raised the Obsidian, Darrow was named the Morning Star. In this final campaign he won the Rim, broke the invincible Sword Armada over Io with Sevro's ambush and Roque's suicide, then gambled everything on Luna: Cassius's feigned betrayal and Darrow's own severed hand were the price of reaching the Sovereign's sealed bunker. There the trap sprang—Octavia and Aja and her knights slain, Sevro risen from a counterfeit death—and though the maimed Jackal revealed four hundred nukes hidden across Luna and burned millions before Darrow tore out his tongue, Mustang seized the Dawn Scepter and the throne, then hanged her twin. Now, in the epilogue, Darrow reveals the secret beneath it all. Pax—the golden-haired boy Mustang has just presented on an Earth beach—was born nine months after the Lion's Rain while Darrow lay imprisoned on the Jackal's stone table. Fearing enemies would hunt the child, Mustang hid the pregnancy aboard the Dejah Thoris, left the boy with Kavax's wife in the belt, and returned to war; the peace she sought was for her son's sake. Her long test of Darrow was to see whether the sword could also become a father worthy of the boy—and, counseled by Darrow's mother, she kept the truth until now because her people needed a sword, not a father. The war is not over, and the sacrifices made to take Luna will haunt the new world, but Darrow is no longer alone in the dark. His friends have pieced him back together and each carries a part of Eo's dream, and at last he can be a builder as well as a destroyer. When Pax is old enough, he and Mustang will tell the boy of the rage of Ares, the strength of Ragnar, the honor of Cassius, the love of Sevro, the loyalty of Victra, and the dream of Eo—the girl who inspired him to live for more.
