Carl

Crawler Carl · Carl the Compensated Anarchist

Barefoot crawler who survived a fifty-to-one Death Challenge and walks into the fifth floor hunting gnomes.

Story so far

Carl finished the fourth floor of Iron Tangle having done what nobody expected: survived a Death Challenge! the system AI priced at fifty-to-one against him, saved because Katia Grim impersonated him and Princess Donut realized the god Grull was being puppeted by Prince Maestro. He capped the pig-boy god's humiliation with a second viral snick, and walked into the post-floor interview with Odette still bruised, still smiling on camera, still keeping score.

In the production trailer he met Loita, the kua-tin admin wearing the dahlia pin of the Bloom, who has replaced Zev as the team's PR agent and now sits in on every interview to police what crawlers learn. Carl refused to surrender his horror novel, memorized Loita's pin for the symbology section he intends to add to the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, and catalogued every leak Odette managed before being muted, above all her unfinished sentence about Chris Andrews. Transferred to a blank warehouse of one-way doors, he watched Donut spin the wheels that assigned them the Air Quadrant and the Dirigible Gnomes, then stepped out into hot, blowing sand to go take a castle in the sky.

Appearance

A big, weathered man in tattered boxer shorts and a dark cloak, permanently barefoot, scarred and soot-stained from the Iron Tangle, with a jaw clenched behind a television smile.

Role

Crawler, demolitions specialist, and the strategic brain of the team entering the fifth floor.

Relationships

Princess Donut — His cat, team leader, and the one he calms when she trembles with rage.
Katia Grim — Teammate whose impersonation of him saved his life in the Death Challenge.
Mordecai — Trainer who will be furious he keeps tangling with gods and factions.
Loita — New handler he stares down on first meeting; mutual hostility declared.
Odette — Interviewer, information source, and secret backer he still cannot read.
