Story so far

Earth is the dungeon and game show Dungeon Crawler World, crawled by Carl, his cat Princess Donut, their manager Mordecai, and the shapeshifter Katia, who have just cleared the fourth floor, the monstrous subway-maze 'Iron Tangle.' Recently, at the post-floor Odette interview, the team meets their new handler: Loita, a hostile Bloom-party kua-tin admin who has replaced the beloved Zev (shipped off to ominous 'reeducation' after a tragedy back home) and who censors the show at every turn, even banning snacks. Carl learns the Death Challenge he survived was a galaxy-wide gambling event that had pegged his odds at fifty-to-one and cost Borant dearly, and endures fresh mockery over a new fabricated sex-tape 'snick.' Odette confirms she personally, not her husband, backed Hekla, teasing a deeper game she won't yet explain, and repeatedly tries to warn Carl about the hunting brother Chris before Loita mutes her. Then comes the choice of the fifth floor: spinning two great wheels, Donut lands the party in the Air quadrant, facing the Dirigible Gnomes of the Wasteland Fortress. Odette's parting hint, that she's glad they have all those crafting tables, and a warning of endless possibilities linger as a door opens onto a harsh, sand-swept desert. Clutching a paperback he couldn't stow, Carl follows Donut out to go gnome hunting, and the book ends, the fifth floor, and the next chapter of the crawl, beginning.

Death Challenge! — A pop-up galactic gambling event, not a boss fight, that priced Carl's survival at fifty to one. The Quadrant Wheels — Two casino-style wheels in the transfer room that randomly assign each team its fifth-floor quadrant and enemy. The Level Collapse — The floor's five-hour countdown to collapse, running as Carl launches the train into the abyss. A Champion Has Fallen — System-wide announcement of a champion's death and claimed bounty, source unknown to Carl's group. Dungeon Crawler World — The show stops the world, sells a death live, takes bets — and then does not bother to announce the result.

The world

location
The Iron Tangle
The fourth floor — a vast, moving subway/rail network of colored lines, monster-filling trains, and safe transfer stations.
location
The Abyss
A mile-wide flaming pit ringed by thousands of portals — where the colored trains are dumped as garbage, revealing the floor's true machinery.
location
Station 36
The wrath ghouls' gathering point — and, having no soul crystal, the one room a crawler team can actually hold.
location
Station 72
A stairwell station housing a top-of-the-line ghoul generator, now vomiting blister ghouls up the Vermillion line.
location
The Desperado Club
An exclusive crawler club — 'So fun it hurts' — whose members-only section Carl and Donut can access via their neck-tattoo passes.
location
Station 24
The one stairwell station with stairs and no ghouls — which is exactly why Carl expects something worse to gather there.
