A pop-up galactic gambling event, not a boss fight, that priced Carl's survival at fifty to one.
Odette finally explains on air what a Death Challenge is: not a boss battle at all, but a pop-up gambling event in which viewers, in systems where wagering is legal, bet on dozens of possible outcomes at different odds. Bets may be general, such as Carl surviving, or specific, such as Carl surviving while the Mimic is killed by Grull and Grull is ejected from the arena by a secondary summoning.
The system AI set Carl's general survival odds at fifty to one. Viewers who agreed with Princess Donut that his team would come for him piled in, and the spread slid but far less than it should have, leaving Borant Corporation badly exposed and filing an appeal. Donut found the odds personally offensive, listing Elle McGib's flight speed, Li Na's chains and Katia Grim's dodging as proof; five of the rescuers had been in the area's top ten. Minutes after the challenge ended, a new team-wide snick hit the net and its views went through the oort cloud.
The fourth floor's climactic wager, whose outcome cost Borant heavily and made Odette rich.
