character

Holden

Lifting off at last, Holden frees Basia, gives Miller a Viking funeral by firing the ship's last protomolecule polyp into the sun, reunites with Naomi, and promises Murtry a quiet grave on Luna.

Story so far

Holden leaves Ilus with the battered Rocinante, itemizing every repair for Avasarala's bill. He says his goodbyes to the rebuilding colonists — and quietly frees Basia rather than take him to trial, reasoning that he likes the man and Lucia, that breaking up their family solves nothing, that Basia won't set more bombs, and that out here 'beyond the borders of civilization' black-and-white legal arguments don't fit. Once in orbit, he savors a first cup of real coffee, then does the 'shitty job': suited in vacuum, he spends five hours tearing apart the cargo bay to find the last protomolecule polyp — a fingertip of flesh behind a conduit, the remnant that hitchhiked from Ganymede and anchored Miller.

He scrapes it, torches the residue, seals it in a probe, and has Naomi fire it into Ilus's sun: a Viking funeral for the detective, 'the second world you've saved… goodbye, my friend.' He reunites with Naomi (who reveals Havelock was Miller's old Ceres partner), vows never to be separated from her again, then visits the prisoner Murtry in the med bay to gloat — he'll be dropped at the UN in Lovell City on Luna and buried in legal obscurity, like a prisoner Holden once delivered there who 'ceased to exist.' He lets Amos have a private word with Murtry, half-afraid he's just gotten the man killed.

Appearance

An aging Earther man, late thirties, gaunt and worn but recovering; here clean-shaven-tired aboard ship, hair sweat-spiked, then suited for vacuum work in the cargo bay.

Role

POV leader; the captain who ends the ordeal by freeing Basia, laying Miller to rest, and consigning Murtry to a quiet legal grave.

Relationships

Miller — The friend whose last protomolecule remnant he removes and fires into the sun in a Viking funeral.
Naomi Nagata — His partner he reunites with and vows never to leave again, learning she rescued herself and that Havelock knew Miller.
Adolphus Murtry — His prisoner he gloats over, bound for a UN cell on Luna and legal oblivion.
Basia Merton — The settler he quietly frees to stay with his family rather than face trial.
Amos Burton — His enforcer he lets have a private, ominous word with the captive Murtry.
