Story so far
In the Rocinante's galley, Holden cannot stop replaying the Celestine's footage of the protomolecule structure rising from Venus — swatting ships aside like a whale through guppies, folding into a streamlined dart and flying off, leaving the planet somehow diminished. Coffee cold, sandwich untouched, he tells Naomi this may be the end: not an alien virus anymore, but the thing the protomolecule came billions of years to build, capable of anything. Her gentle, repeated question — 'Can you do anything about it?' — cuts through; there is nothing he can do.
She goes to bed. What terrifies him isn't the ending of one thing but the beginning of something utterly outside human experience, for which no one can prepare. Then a man clears his throat by the refrigerator — rumpled gray suit, dented porkpie hat, a blue protomolecule firefly drifting off his cheek.
Detective Miller, dead since Eros, stands as if he'd always been there, apologetic and uncomfortable: 'Hey. We gotta talk.' The war is over, but a stranger, larger thing has just begun.
