Rocinante

Reactor damped by the defense grid and now battle-scarred, the Roci tows the Barbapiccola on marine tether-thread — and is holed down its port side by shuttle-torpedo shrapnel.

Story so far

The Rocinante, the crew's Martian corvette, is crippled but fighting. Its fusion reactor is damped by Ilus's awakened defense grid, leaving it on failing battery power and sliding toward reentry alongside the other ships. With Naomi back aboard, it performs a feat it was never built for: towing the full-sized freighter Barbapiccola into a stable orbit on standard Martian marine-retrieval tether filament, its belly rigged with a dozen ceramic-and-steel foot supports meeting at a juncture hundreds of meters out.

The ship 'moans' and 'shrieks' through a resonance window under the strain but holds, extending the freighter's death clock from hours to days. Then RCE's battery-driven shuttle-torpedo strikes; the Roci's point-defense cannons shred it, but the shrapnel — undodgeable while tethered — holes the ops deck, wounding Havelock, and wrecks the port side: sensors, PDCs, maneuvering thrusters, a torpedo-rail breach, one tether foot support lost. It can now only maneuver 'counter-clockwise,' and with no dock within a year and the reactor cold, its own survival remains as precarious as the ships it's trying to save.

Appearance

A Martian corvette, gunmetal and utilitarian; here scarred and holed down its port side, foam anti-spalling flakes drifting in breached compartments, trailing hair-thin tether lines to the freighter below.

Role

The crew's home and warship; the reactor-damped corvette improvising a tether tow to save the Barbapiccola, battered by the retaliatory shuttle strike.

Relationships

Naomi Nagata — Its XO and engineer, back aboard and coaxing it through the tow and the damage.
Barbapiccola — The freighter it tows on tether-thread into a safer orbit, buying its people days.
Alex Kamal — Its pilot, flying the crippled ship through the resonance window and the torpedo intercept.
