Story so far
Miller's story ends with a funeral. His consciousness spent switching off Ilus, the only thing of him left aboard the Rocinante is the physical anchor that projected him: a fingertip-sized protomolecule polyp, the last of the monster that hitchhiked from Ganymede, hidden behind a cargo-bay conduit less than half a meter from where it first appeared. Holden scrapes it out, torches the residue, seals it in a sensor probe, and has Naomi send it into Ilus's sun.
Holden gives him a proper send-off — 'That's the second world you've saved. And once again, we have nothing to offer you in return… goodbye, my friend' — imagining Miller's dry retort that the Viking funeral shouldn't be 'all about how you feel.' Also revealed: Havelock, the Roci's new crewman, was Miller's own partner back on Ceres, before any of them ever met. The detective who died at Eros, returned as a protomolecule ghost, and gave everything to save two worlds is finally, wholly gone — his last remnant a bright mote falling into a star.
Appearance
No longer manifest; his last earthly form a fingertip-sized blob of protomolecule flesh, scraped from a conduit and sealed in a probe bound for the sun.

Chapter 6
- The protomolecule's self-aware construct of the dead detective — 'the Investigator' — reaching out forever, and haunting [[Holden]] toward the gates.
Chapter 9
- The protomolecule's ghost of the dead detective, who reveals he rides a node seeded in the [[Rocinante]] and is hunting whatever killed the gate-builders.
Chapter 14
- The protomolecule's blind machine, still reaching out — but now touching something on [[Ilus]], and the investigator's old cop-voice stirring: 'This could get ugly, kid.'
Chapter 17
- Miller names [[Ilus]] an alien 'murder scene' — a remade world with a dormant orbital defense grid — and vows they'll keep reaching until they find what killed its makers.
Chapter 26
- An interlude inside the reaching protomolecule: mapping the dead alien network, it discovers a void that kills what touches it — and the Investigator calls it a clue.
Chapter 27
- Miller, now eerily human and joking, tells Holden he can't control the protomolecule — but his map shows a 'ball of nothing' that may be a remnant of whatever killed this world.
Chapter 38
- An interlude inside the alien machine: it reaches out 113 times a second, builds and kills the investigator over and over — until the pattern breaks, Miller persists, and turns to the dead space.
Chapter 39
- Miller admits he can't control the waking defenses but offers a slow-drop workaround, and bargains hard to get Holden north via a buried transit network to the dead spot.
Chapter 49
- Miller collects on his bargain, rousing a collapsed Holden to ride an alien transit line north — opening a hidden pillar into a fifty-meter ramp and a metal transport cube.
Chapter 50
- An interlude inside the investigator: a consciousness riding a mindless network, it has found what killed the builders — a still-ticking murder weapon in the dead spot — and knows how to kill and to die.
Chapter 54
- Miller pilots a massive alien digging-robot to carry Holden into the planet's machine-heart, explaining Ilus is a power station and the dead spot a foreign 'bullet' fired at its heart.
Chapter 58
- Miller leads Elvi to the planet's control-center 'nerve cluster' to find the dead spot — but can't perceive the very thing they seek, needing her human eyes to spot what doesn't fit.
Chapter 60
- Built to find what's missing and to die when that's the answer, Miller connects to the whole planet and, torn apart by its defenders, has Elvi carry his last core into the dead spot — spending himself to switch the grid off.
Chapter 61
- An interlude inside Miller's end: he becomes the whole planet, comforts its frightened trapped minds — 'We're gonna be fine' — remembers Julie, holds Elvi's hand, and the network at last reaches out and stops.
Chapter 63
- Miller's earthly anchor is laid to rest: Holden finds the last protomolecule polyp aboard the Roci, seals it, and fires it into Ilus's sun — a Viking funeral for the detective who saved a second world.
