Story so far
Miller finds Julie Mao alive within the protomolecule-built Eros system, persuades her to steer the station away from Earth, and remains with her as Eros goes to Venus. The weeks since the station's dispersal confirm his death, though the exact end inside the alien structure is inaccessible to everyone left behind.
Fred Johnson intends to present Miller at the Earth-Mars-Belt peace conference as a noble Belter who freely died to save Earth. James Holden objects that this turns a particular, difficult ex-cop into an icon and repeats the dehumanizing habit that made Eros possible. Fred accepts that the symbol is politically useful, but Holden insists on Miller's full name: Josephus Aloisus Miller.
Appearance
Miller was a lean Ceres-born man nearing fifty, with thinning hair, stubble, tired watchful eyes, and a narrow haggard face. He wore a rumpled gray suit and porkpie hat; this describes him alive.
Role
Miller is the dead investigator whose imperfect compassion saved Earth and whose memory is immediately contested between truth and political necessity.
Relationships
Julie Mao — Miller stays with Julie as she turns Eros toward Venus, and both are lost to the inaccessible alien aftermath.
James Holden — Holden wants Miller remembered by name and as a complicated man rather than reduced to a convenient Belt martyr.
Fred Johnson — Fred Johnson turns Miller's sacrifice into a unifying OPA symbol, despite knowing that the real man was far less usable.
