Adolphus Murtry ends the book a prisoner. His leg wound minor but his right arm shattered by Holden's bullet, he's handcuffed to a crash couch in the Rocinante's med bay while the bone regrows, bound for the UN complex in Lovell City on Luna. Unbroken and unrepentant, he clings to legalism — 'You keep talking like I've broken the law.
I haven't… Everything I did was within the bounds of the UN charter' — while Holden gloats that a smart Earth legal team has two years to invent charges, and that, like a prisoner Holden once delivered there, Murtry will 'cease to exist' in a deep cell with no fame. Then Amos gets a private word: he grants Murtry was a 'good player' for taking him from behind, but names the unforgivable thing — 'you made me kill Wei. I liked Wei' — and promises to finish it someday when Murtry 'won't be helpless.' The conqueror-ideologue is beaten, jailed, and marked, headed for obscurity instead of the martyrdom he courted.
