Apito's enforced-peace masquerade spell — a truce broken by Yarilo's crime, and the scramble where the memorial crystal was first looted.
The Butcher's Masquerade is a peace-enforcing spell and grand event associated with the goddess Apito, repeatedly invoked as Rosetta's myth and the memorial-crystal history come together. Under its magically imposed truce, guests and their familiars are meant to be safe — a peace the banished god Yarilo shattered by sexually assaulting another guest's familiar, the crime for which Apito banished him to the Nothing. It was also the setting of a lethal scramble in the prior books: in the rush to loot Queen Imogen's corpse there, Osvaldo's pet stone hawk Gimli was killed and Osvaldo looted the Apito Memorial Crystal to spare his party a smite.
Prepotente's crystal quest from the Midnight Epicure likewise arrived 'just at the beginning of the Butcher's Masquerade.' The event thus sits at the crossroads of the crystal mystery, Yarilo's banishment, and the wider Scavenger cosmology Carl is piecing together.
