Story so far
Donald entered Congress in 2049 with training in architecture and planning, a marriage to Helen, and a longstanding connection to Paul Thurman. Thurman recruited him into a secret construction project whose full design was withheld even from its participants. Working with his former partner Anna Thurman and fellow congressman Mick Webb revived his interest in architecture while straining his marriage. Excess deliveries and duplicate facilities hinted at a scale he did not understand. He feared nanotechnological catastrophe and suspected his own side might strike first; medication dulled his distress as the work continued. At the National Convention, Helen was at a different delegation after his messages failed to reach her. Blasts interrupted his attempt to find her, and the crowd forced him underground. Later awakening as Donald, he recognized a report signed Troy as his own and remembered both his contribution to the silos and his termination of Silo Twelve. He rejected Thurman’s justification for the destruction of the world.
Donald agreed to investigate trouble in Silo Eighteen partly to keep searching for Helen. Records revealed that she and Mick had raised two children, and he traced her descendants. His grief and resentment gave way to intimacy with Anna. Examining Victor’s work, he concluded that surviving memories might explain Eighteen’s recurring unrest and favored a reset over extermination, accepting that saving the population might still involve killing individuals. He found his sister Charlotte preserved in suspension and connected his own failure to forget with medication taken before the catastrophe. Rather than return to freezing, he escaped through the drone launch shaft, hoping to die outside near Helen’s burial place. He exposed a hand before being seized and dragged back. In a later awakening, staff addressed him as Thurman. Donald maintained the mistake, discovered that Thurman’s login accepted his own passkey, and used the resulting authority to investigate the escaped cleaner and the project’s intended end. He remained uncertain who had arranged the identity switch.
After recovering his phone and wedding ring, Donald suspected Anna had engineered his separation from Helen. He woke her, confronted her, and gave her a recovery drink mixed with sleeping pills, holding her as she died. He subsequently concluded that the silo rankings would select a single surviving silo and that Silo One’s people were intended to die; he realized too late that Anna had been trying to tell him something vital. Troubled by his killing and increasingly coughing blood, he continued studying the records. He conducted Lukas’s initiation and confirmed that their own side had caused the catastrophe. He then secretly woke Charlotte to help investigate the outside, telling her he had seen blue skies and green grass before a drone went down while concealing his own earlier excursion. He woke Thurman from a pod labeled Troy, restrained and questioned him at gunpoint, then shot him when Thurman reached for the pistol. Donald resolved to work secretly with Charlotte to discover and repair what was wrong. Now he has cleared the Silo One Communications Room to call Mayor Juliette privately. Staff call him Shepherd and know only that he is in charge. He tells Juliette he never sought the job, threatens that he can shut down her silo with a button, claims to have saved it long ago and to know the truth she seeks, and warns her to be careful where she digs.
