Helen

Karma Brewer

Donald’s wife before the catastrophe, Helen later lived as Karma Brewer, raised a family and died at eighty-two; Donald continues remembering their life together.

Story so far

Helen lived in Savannah while her husband Donald Keene served in Washington. She considered him a good husband but distrusted those around him, feared Paul Thurman was exploiting him and worried about his renewed work with former partner Anna Thurman. She had opposed his run for office, offered medical help when he described an alarming threat and reassured him of her love. They postponed children while pursuing their careers, and their conversations grew superficial under the strain of his work.

Thurman insisted that Helen attend the convention. She texted Donald from the Tennessee delegation, but they did not enter the same silo. Donald later discovered that she had lived in Silo Two as Karma Brewer, working as a teacher, school master and judge, fulfilling her old ambition. She died at eighty-two; her death record named husband Rick Brewer and children Athena and Mars as survivors. Donald acknowledged that she had shared her life with Mick Webb and remembered their children and grandchildren. By Victor’s funeral she had been dead for almost a century.

Helen is buried beneath the concrete tower in the bowl beside Donald’s silo. Donald continues to grieve the life he feels he lost, while remembering that she lived and loved without him. His latest recollection is of her driving from Savannah to visit him in Washington with their dog.
