Story so far
Charlotte serves overseas as a drone pilot. Donald describes her difficult readjustment at home, her refusal to see a psychiatrist, and medication that made her forgetful and caused a tic. He later recalls that she was diagnosed with PTSD after her first tour and was troubled by directing lethal strikes from the safety of a trailer. He believes she refused medication because she wanted to retain the fear that made her feel human.
At thirty, Charlotte unexpectedly appears at the convention in blue military dress, a visit arranged by Paul Thurman, whom she admires and has campaigned for. Frightened by the blasts, she helps pull Donald toward safety. At orientation she is led away with the other women and put to sleep. Donald eventually finds her in an Emergency Personnel Room cryopod and takes comfort in knowing where she is.
Donald later revives her himself. She wakes coughing, asks where she is, and learns that their parents are gone after her three centuries asleep. Having learned about the silos at orientation, she brings her pilot’s knowledge to the stored drone: she connects it to the launch mechanism, launches successfully, and banks into thick clouds. She suspects the eventual failure comes from its long disuse. She is now recovering in the barracks while Donald secretly wakes Thurman; Donald intends to work with her in secret to lead and repair their world.
