character

Anderson Dawes

Dawes · Governor Dawes

Mourning Fred, Dawes works quietly through Tycho's skeptics, recasting Holden's coming war as the only answer to Marco's failures.

Story so far

Anderson Dawes was the long-time governor and political architect of Ceres Station, an old ally and enemy of Fred Johnson, and a member of Marco Inaros's early Free Navy inner circle. As Marco's authority hardens, Dawes has become difficult to locate even for other insiders, and the extent of his present break is uncertain. He arrives unannounced at the OPA summit on Tycho Station, following an invitation Aimee Ostman extended without consulting James Holden. Holden refuses to admit him to the closed meeting, and Dawes accepts the exclusion with a tight smile.

At Fred's small Tycho memorial, Dawes privately admits that he backed the wrong horse and compromised the friend who had once been his protégé. He then goes from one doubtful OPA leader to another: persuading Ostman not to leave in anger, arguing to Liang Goodfortune that Holden's life has made him a genuine Belt ally, assuring Carlos Walker that the Medina plan need not demand suicidal vanguard service, and joining Micah al-Dujaili's grief over Marco's murder of Carl. Dawes treats Holden as imperfect and vengeful, but believes Marco must be destroyed before anything worthwhile can be rebuilt.

Appearance

An older Belter man with white hair, pocked cheeks, and a deferential smile that is nearly apologetic without becoming humble; he wears dignified civilian clothes and carries a ceramic cup.

Role

Dawes is an experienced Belt power broker trying to turn his compromised past into useful support for the anti-Marco coalition.

Relationships

[[Marco Inaros]] — He helped form Marco's early inner circle, but now calls Marco a charismatic violent failure who has betrayed the Belt's promise.
[[Fred Johnson]] — Fred's death makes Dawes confront the personal price of having compromised their long, fraught friendship.
[[James Holden]] — Excluded by Holden, Dawes nevertheless spends his political capital convincing others that Holden is capable of defeating Marco.
