The book so far

Marco Inaros's Free Navy killed billions and once held Medina—the choke point over every ring gate—backed by the shadowy Duarte behind the Laconia gate. After Fred Johnson died in Marco's ambush, Holden took Medina, and Naomi's discovery of a lethal "wake" in the gates let them lure Marco's entire remaining fleet to annihilation. In the peace that followed, an independent Belter spacing union was founded to govern gate traffic and give the Belt a new purpose, with Michio Pa nominated to lead it, while the Rocinante's crew found their way back to ordinary life and Laconia sealed itself away as a problem for another day.

Where things stand

Recently, the story closes far from any battle, with Anna—the minister from earlier days—aboard the colony ship Abbey, emigrating with her wife Nono and daughter Nami to the world Eudoxia, one small part of the great migration now flowing through the reopened gates. In cramped shared quarters she reads Tolstoy, builds community among believers and atheists alike, and watches Nami wrestle with a school project on what history really is: the work of great individuals, or of impersonal forces of money and land and technology. Nami's instinct—that it is never one or the other, always somebody who does the thing and the conditions that made it possible, like nature and nurture—becomes Anna's meditation on the whole war just ended. History, she decides, is less a machine than a generations-long improvisation. And whether among Earth's teeming billions or scattered across a thousand new suns, humanity is always spending its life together and must learn to be gentle with one another. Maybe, if they can manage that, the stars will be better off for having them.

Who matters now

Naomi Nagata
The Rocinante's engineer navigates a strike on Marco's forces while confronting the possibility of fighting people from her own past.
Lately — Naomi turns her transit model into Medina's last defense, sending Giambattista through Arcadia to leave a wake for Marco while her son approaches with the enemy fleet. After the settlement meeting, Naomi celebrates the crew's continued place together while accepting that saving them did not erase her grief for Marco, Filip, and the people lost.

Gate Transit Disappearances — Naomi's predicted gate-space wake consumes the Pella and fourteen Free Navy warships at the Sol gate, proving the phenomenon can be triggered but not understood. Battle of Titan — A costly coalition diversion at Titan draws Free Navy forces aside for the Medina strike but leaves Pa's fleet broken and unable to stop Marco's counterattack. Opa Summit — Fred's planned OPA summit begins without him as Holden seeks firm commitments before exposing the coalition's Medina strategy.
