The old vulture life-goddess of the dungeon myth — Scavenger Mother of Mothers, last of the old gods to fall, mother of Apito, the son, and Scolopendra.
Nekhebit, the Scavenger Mother of Mothers, is a foundational figure in the dungeon's origin myth as Rosetta relays it. Before the current pantheon, older and wilder gods fed on the fruit of the All-Tree; among them was Nekhebit, a life-and-protector deity depicted as a vulture — a scavenger who 'cleaned up after the others.' Forbidden to bear children, she had three anyway: a daughter, Apito; a mysterious son; and a centipede, Scolopendra. When the new gods rose and expelled the old ones (to Sheol, the Nothing, or outright murder — or by killing and converting their worshippers until they faded), Nekhebit was the very last old god to fall, defeated by her own daughter Apito, who absorbed the last of the vulture goddess's worshippers to seize her power.
Crucially she is *a* scavenger but not necessarily *the* Scavenger of the Scavenger's Daughter myth. From the prior books, the reader knows the mortal host Odette ascended into this goddess's mantle to contest the Ascendency; Princess Donut fights as her Champion of Nekhebit.
