The Jackal

Adrius au Augustus · ArchGovernor of Mars

Holding Luna hostage with 500 hidden nukes, the Jackal demands Darrow's suicide—loses his tongue instead, and hangs, his feet pulled in mercy by his twin.

Story so far

The Jackal's true trap springs at last: the nukes were never on Mars but on Luna—four hundred-plus warheads smuggled into the cities by the Syndicate—and Lilath, aboard the Lion of Mars with the trigger, is his insurance. He reveals he ransomed the moon to Octavia for the Morning Throne, and recounts the Institute cave where he rigged the mines and ate a housemate's legs to survive: 'if no one sacrifices, then no one survives.' Detonating bomb after bomb—millions dead each time—he demands Darrow martyr himself so three billion may live and he be crowned Sovereign. Darrow refuses, pins him, and, knowing his evil is spun with the tongue, rips it out—leaving the com in his ear so Lilath hears him wail, and staking his hope that she won't detonate the rest while her master screams.

Captured and displayed tongueless before the Senate, he is hanged a week after Mustang's ascension in a Luna square, proud and unbowed under a stone and a jeering crowd. In the low gravity his neck won't break on its own, and no one steps forward—until Mustang crosses the snow to grip her twin's kicking feet and pull, showing him, at the end, that he was loved.

Appearance

A slight Gold, hair feathery and combed even at the gallows, in a lime-green prisoner jumpsuit; mouth a mutilated bloody stump where his tongue was torn out, a stone-split forehead unblinking.

Role

Antagonist defeated and executed; the coveting monster whose nuclear hostage-gambit fails, silenced by Darrow and hanged with a final mercy from his sister.

Relationships

Darrow — His enemy, who refuses to die for him and rips out his tongue, ending the story with his silence.
Mustang — His twin sister, who pulls his feet at the gallows to show him he was loved even at the end.
Lilath — His chief Bonerider and 'insurance,' triggering the Luna nukes from the Lion of Mars on his command.
Octavia au Lune — The Sovereign he blackmailed with the hidden nukes into naming him her successor.
