Gutted by the Reaper on her own broadcast, the Sovereign dies unrepentant—owning her sins as 'sacrifices' and warning Darrow he must stop her killer, Adrius.
Believing she has won, Octavia au Lune mounts a live broadcast of Darrow's execution, letting the Jackal deliver it with Sevro's pistol—only for the gun to be a dud and Cassius's true allegiance to detonate her whole world. Darrow buries a hidden knife in her belly again and again, spilling her open, and her deadliest Fury Aja is bled to death before her eyes. Dying, she shows no weakness, no begging: only sadness and lost love.
Confronted with the holocube proving she let the Jackal massacre Cassius's forty kin as the price of Darrow's Triumph, she calls her crimes not sins but 'sacrifices—what it takes to rule,' insisting the broken world is the best humanity can afford and that Darrow will become the same. She warns that her death unleashes a succession war that will tear Gold apart, that someone must rule or the worlds shatter, and with her last breath charges Darrow: 'You must stop Adrius.' After sixty years, the Sovereign of the Society dies staring into the dark—and the Jackal begins to laugh.
An aged, imperious Gold woman, tightly-bound hair shot with rivers of gray, blue tendrils of failed rejuvenation worming from her eyes; gutted and pale, holding her stomach together, regal even in death.
