Juliette Nichols

Juliette · Jules · Nichols · Sheriff Nichols

Juliette, the mechanic who survived cleaning and returned, is now mayor, pursuing an undisclosed project while distrusting the voice from Silo One.

Story so far

Juliette grew up amid family loss: her baby brother died when she was thirteen, and her father believed she understood that her mother had killed herself. She sought an early apprenticeship in Mechanical, taught herself repairs, and came to regard its people as family. A capable shift foreman who argued for preventive maintenance, she accepted the sheriff’s post only after securing a power holiday to repair the generator. The successful refit gave way to investigations of Jahns’s death and Holston’s decision to leave. After finding Marnes dead and investigating concealed computer material with Scottie, she began to suspect that IT deliberately made cleaning equipment fail. Removed from office and eventually condemned, she refused to clean. Her suit’s heat tape held, and she crossed the hill to another silo, forced its airlock open, and survived on its foul but breathable air.

There she found Solo, learned about the other silos, and resolved to return home with the truth. They worked on draining the flooded lower levels while she maintained a secret connection with Lukas. Juliette wired the submerged sump pump during a perilous dive, then survived the loss of her air supply by breathing beneath stair treads on her ascent. Finding Solo injured and children surviving in the farms, she refused to abandon them and promised to return. She appealed to Walker and Shirly to stop the fighting at home, repaired another cleaning suit, and crossed back with no air for a return journey. She entered her own airlock during a cleaning and survived its fire beneath a heat-tape blanket, suffering severe burns; the dead cleaner she found was not Lukas. During recovery she mourned Deagan Knox and Marck, reunited with Lukas, and learned that residents had elected her mayor. She made truthful government a condition of accepting and chose to visit her father before returning to her friends.

As mayor, Juliette has challenged Donald Keene’s claims that he understands her experience and once saved her silo. She intends to uncover what his people have done and warned him about her people digging. Lukas reports that she distrusts the caller and doubts that the same person speaks every time. She is currently away working on a project whose details have not been disclosed in Lukas’s call.
