Story so far
Shirly, Marck’s wife and Mechanical’s second-shift foreman, helped clear the generator’s controls for Juliette’s refit and let Juliette take responsibility for restarting it. She maintained their friendship through costly messages and updates on work below, while also bringing meals to Walker. After questions about cleaning suits provoked resistance, she joined Knox’s delegation and carried a rifle in the expedition.
Deagan Knox ordered Shirly and Courtnee to remain behind helping farmers restore power. The assignment kept Shirly out of the attack on IT. Reunited with the wounded Marck, she helped him retreat to Mechanical, then reached back for him as others forced her through the barricade. She lost her husband in the fighting and began questioning what the rebellion had cost.
Shirly kept Walker fed and helped modify his radio, recognizing that intercepted voices came from other silos. After an attack drove them into the generator control room, she helped reassemble communications and heard Juliette alive. She fetched blasting-cap transmitters from the mining storehouse, returning with a bleeding mouth, ringing ears and a possibly injured ankle. Once contact was established, she warned Juliette that defenders were routing generator exhaust into IT’s cooling vents and worried about the mechanical consequences. She had too little time to tell Juliette about Marck. As the attackers overwhelmed their people, Shirly and Courtnee held one another helplessly. Juliette’s subsequent calls went unanswered; during her recovery, Juliette asks to see Shirly and is told she cannot.
