Story so far
Born in the down deep, Marck apprenticed in Electrical under Walker and came to know Juliette like a sister. He remembered her clever solution to the pump assignment that initiated her into Mechanical. An oilman and later Knox’s shift leader, he helped install the generator’s new floor mounts and embraced his wife Shirly after its successful restart.
Convinced that improved suits offered a chance outside, Marck accused IT of deliberately sending people to die. He carried supplies and arms for the expedition, worrying about Shirly as they climbed. When she was assigned to help farmers, he took her pack and gave her his multi-tool. The explosion at IT left him temporarily deaf and wounded in one arm. He covered the survivors’ retreat, searched unsuccessfully for Shirly near level fifty-six, and tried to help a badly wounded Supply worker before another explosion drove the group onward.
Marck reunited with Shirly at Supply and confirmed Knox and McLain’s deaths. With her help he reached Mechanical despite blood loss, then returned up the stairs to shoot at attackers preventing refugees from entering. He lost his rifle while fleeing and was shot in the back. Unable to feel his legs, he told Shirly to go and that he loved her as she was pulled through the barricade. He died outside it. Juliette later mourns him while reading news from down deep.
