Mechanical

Maintenance

Mechanical is the silo’s maintenance community, battered by an armed uprising; radio reports now announce surrenders among its people.

Story so far

Occupying eight floors, Mechanical combines practical skills in a mutually supportive community. Deagan Knox heads the department, and Juliette entered its apprenticeship a year early with her father’s approval. Workers commonly accumulate unused vacation time through overtime. Juliette describes the department as recycling oxygen and pumping exhaled toxins into the earth. The successful generator refit brought the workers together in celebration.

Mechanical sent hundreds of signatures seeking to save Juliette and designed the durable tape used on her suit. After Walker explained that cleaning suits were deliberately made to fail, anger turned into preparations for confrontation. Workers assembled weapons, sent blasting powder to Supply, and planned to march upward while a small crew kept operations running. Some disguised themselves in yellow overalls.

The retreating fighters were pursued downward, and those left behind welded steel across Mechanical’s entrance. Weeks of fighting followed. Bernard said Mechanical threatened to cut power but lacked control over IT’s supply. Mechanics raised another stair barricade and defended the generator room, yet attackers penetrated their position and killed defenders. Bernard planned to replace them with farmers; radio reports now announce people surrendering in Mechanical.
