Mechanical is the silo's maintenance community, drawn into rebellion and barricaded fighting after Juliette's survival of cleaning.
Headed by Deagan Knox, Mechanical occupies eight floors and maintains the systems on which silo life depends, including oxygen recycling and server cooling. Its workers wear blue denim overalls, carry blue identification, and routinely work enough overtime to accumulate unused leave. It accepted Juliette as an unusually young apprentice; she came to regard its practical, mutually supportive community as family.
Hundreds petitioned to save Juliette. Mechanical's durable heat tape helped her survive, and Walker's explanation of the deliberately failing suits sparked anger. Workers prepared improvised weapons, sent blasting powder to Supply, and marched upward while a small crew kept operations running. The attack became a retreat, and those left behind welded steel plates over Mechanical's entrance. Fighting continued for weeks as workers became trapped behind their defenses.
Further barriers were welded across the stairs as attackers pushed inward; defenders died and radio reports eventually announced surrenders. In the account reaching Silo One, Bernard Holland describes Mechanical fighting during its retreat and then entrenching itself behind a barricade. His report presents that stage of the conflict rather than the whole community's experience.
Mechanical workers wear blue denim overalls and carry blue identification cards; some fighters used yellow overalls as disguises.
Mechanical sustains the silo's essential machinery and became the center of armed resistance after Juliette's cleaning.
