Lukas Kyle

Lukas · Luke · Mr. Kyle

Lukas, an IT technician trained for silo leadership and Juliette’s romantic partner, protects her project’s secrecy while fearing its outcome.

Story so far

Lukas began as an IT technician who spent his evenings observing the stars, charting their movement with charcoal and hoping a shadow would continue his work. He met Juliette in the cafeteria and grew attached to her, visiting her during imprisonment and grieving before her cleaning. Afterward he protected some of her belongings, secretly keeping her badge, watch, ring, and multi-tool. Bernard Holland drew him into the hidden rooms beneath the servers to study The Order and Legacy, revealing the existence of other silos. During the fighting Lukas shot a woman preparing to throw a bomb and continued firing through tears. Confined for weeks, he read forbidden history, called Juliette in silo seventeen, and struggled with both his part in the violence and the demands of his training. He refused her suggestion that he kill Bernard.

Lukas passed the initiation naming him next in line to operate silo eighteen. When he asked how the silos began, he concluded that their own side had caused the catastrophe, and the voice conducting the ceremony confirmed it. He questioned becoming part of that system. Investigating Juliette’s former lover, he found records that convinced him George had been murdered. Bernard discovered his communication with Juliette and announced that Lukas would be sent to clean. During the march upward, hearing her over Peter Billings’s radio helped Lukas decide against taking his own life. He survived and stayed beside Juliette during her recovery from the airlock fire. He told Peter he had proof Bernard killed a man, urged Juliette to fill the leadership vacuum, and kissed her, though he also admitted helping withhold some of her notes.

Lukas now reports that normal routines have resumed without another uprising, although reassignments have left his workplace short-staffed. He has reached volume C in his reading and questions whether the books’ contents are real. He refuses to tell the caller what the mayor is working on. Having tried to persuade Juliette to abandon the project, he fears it will end badly, but he believes the caller wants to help.
