Ysalte is a goddess bound in one of the dungeon's mysterious non-charging memorial crystals — the second such crystal Osvaldo hunted in the forest during Faction Wars for his god Tupa, only to have it rejected as 'wrong.' By the final heat the Ysalte crystal has passed to the crawler Britney, whom the goddess is progressively possessing: Ysalte's power lets Britney move as fast as the dungeon's fastest crawler, fast enough to kill Osvaldo at the escape portal. Per Samantha, the possession is not permanent-by-default — Britney must carry the gem to a plinth at the Basilica, the 'Vulgar Temple,' the Halls of the Ascendency, or Sheol and set it in place to be free of the goddess 'for good' (or, left unplinthed, Ysalte simply keeps taking her over). Ysalte thus becomes another thread in the tangled web of malfunctioning memorial crystals, sealed gods, and the Scavenger's Daughter cosmology the crawlers are trying to survive.
