Clay-Ton

Clay · the cretin bassist

A cretin who traded fighting for the upright bass — an old acquaintance who vouches for Carl's crew and faces down the casino guards for them.

Story so far

Clay-Ton is a cretin Carl and Princess Donut know from earlier in the crawl — once a fighter (part of a group with Sledgie, Bomo, and Very Sullen, all now scattered with expired contracts), he told his handlers he no longer wanted to fight and was allowed to join the Desperado Club's house band as its upright bassist. When the crew's thirty crawlers push into the remodeled, jazz-age club and the orc-and-troll guards move to block them, Clay-Ton sets down his bass, pushes through, recognizes the newly werewolf Chris ('You different' — 'Like Altered Beast'), and plants himself between the crawlers and the guards: 'Chris and Donut and friends pass. If you stop them, you stop me,' with the succubus singer offering backup.

His veteran read on the situation ('Late-stage crawlers you don't try to stop') convinces the troll Klonder to stand down and bow the party in. A gentle, decisive old ally who clears the path before returning to his band.

A cretin — a squat, tough dungeon humanoid — incongruously toting an upright bass in a jazz-band setting.
