IT

IT department

IT controls the silo’s computers and cleaning-suit laboratories; its privileged position has made it a focus of suspicion and armed conflict.

Story so far

IT circulated Allison’s work on recovering deleted information, even as she accused the department of concealing a secret about realistic screen imagery. The department trains teenage apprentices and has fewer than two dozen staff, mostly men. It traditionally reviews appointments to judicial and law-enforcement posts. Its apartments, offices, and workshops occupy three levels, with the main landing on level thirty-four; Juliette said it consumed more than a quarter of the silo’s power, and its lighting remained bright through the power holiday.

IT recruited Scottie from Mechanical and maintained a file accusing Juliette of diverting supplies. Juliette came to suspect secret parallel supply chains and a deliberate effort to keep inhabitants inside. After materials were substituted, IT unknowingly built the durable suit that carried her beyond the hill. Opposition grew into plans by McLain and Deagan Knox to seize the department, and armed defenders fired on attackers obstructed by chairs at its entrance.

Bernard Holland intended Lukas to take over running IT while he concentrated on the mayoralty. During the resistance, Shirly reported witnesses seeing IT fully powered despite a shutdown from below, and workers planned to feed generator exhaust into its server-room cooling supply. Juliette has now left IT with Lukas escorting her to the landing.
