The book's closing state: the crawl survived, the galaxy destabilized, and the war moving out of the dungeon.
By the epilogue the ruin has arrived on every level at once. Inside the dungeon, Carl sits in a freezing Zero Zone cubicle covered in ash and blood, refusing every exit deal, unable to learn whether Katia is alive, and learning instead that Princess Chandra is his wife. Above it, the Homecoming Queen hangs over Earth with illegal enhancement zone weapons green across the board and a shipful of murdered orc children on its conscience - or on nobody's, since York cannot feel it.
Outside, a mantis system has gone nova without warning, a The Dream cruiser has burned into Australia, a Nebular colony has killed itself en masse, an embargo has strangled the tunnel gate, and Porthus has told the galaxy on Breaking News that the Syndicate must stop the crawl or else. Colonel Boomer orders the lasers warmed and the war brought out of the dungeon. At a doomed waystation, Eris snaps her fingers and burns a bankrupt shopkeeper's face for fun. Nothing has been resolved; everything has been let out.
The end-state the book leaves its universe in as the crawl's war spills into the stars.
