Aliens turned Earth into an eighteen-floor dungeon broadcast for galactic profit; Carl, a barefoot Coast Guard vet, and Princess Donut, his ex's show cat, clawed through six floors to become its breakout stars. Book seven was the ninth floor, Faction Wars for flooded Larracos, which the Princess Posse won: Donut's 'War Crime' atrocity annihilated the enemy army and made her the game's strongest crawler, the warlords Fang and Tagg were destroyed (Louis saved by a naiad organ transplant), Katia sacrificed herself into pregnancy to reach and protect the dungeon's hidden children, Donut executed the CEO-goddess Huanxin Jinx, and Justice Light broke open the Nothing—waking the god-beast Scolopendra—before the fire god Emberus melted the floor behind the fleeing survivors.
The epilogue lands after the dust. In orbit aboard the well-armed Homecoming Queen, the hollow tenodera poet York—who secretly vaporized the orc yacht of children on Rosetta's orders—learns phase two has begun: Porthus has publicly declared a resistance movement, the Open Intellect Action Network, threatening every Syndicate system unless the crawl ends. Boomer readies Cronus power armor and breaching suits to carry the war out of the dungeon, dispatching a squad to back up the pregnant veteran, Katia, on the surface. In a frozen zero zone, an ash-caked, shaking Carl meets his lawyer Quasar; roughly 20,000 crawlers reached the tenth floor—a record—but every exit deal is garbage, so Carl (and Donut) refuse them all, learning the next floor is a deadly vehicle race called 'Don't Come in Last.' Quasar drops a bombshell: Donut's new attorney, Princess Chandra, Esquire, is Carl's new wife. And at a failing waystation outside the tunnel gate, the goddess of chaos Eris—loose at last, her laughter having haunted Carl—reveals herself and attacks, promising the madness is far from over.
