character

Loita

The Bloom censor · the substitute agent

The genocidal Bloom handler reveals her true hatred of humanity — and is assassinated by Carl via the exploding robot toy.

Story so far

Loita reaches her end in Stage 3. Overseeing the Veriluxx infomercial from the sealed underwater trailer's couch (a fish rebreather round her neck, dribbling water), she drops all pretense: she despises human 'dry' culture as 'a cancer upon the Bloom,' wishes only to exterminate humanity, and boasts that after the crawl Borant will seal its borders for the Bloom's 'reawakening.' Most damningly, she reveals what the Bloom did to force Zev back into the fold — 'unspeakable things to her mother and her aunts' — because Zev's shiny-loving generation must be broken to save 'True Unity' and 'the Great Consensus.' This confession hands Carl both motive and resolve. When the self-destruct-rigged Veriluxx Donut toy he planted beside her detonates, it maims her — one arm and both lower legs gone, body flash-fried.

Because saving her means dropping the shield and rupturing the cracked window (killing Carl and Donut), Borant lets her die. She expires spitting 'The Bloom will prevail. You will be forgotten,' as Carl mocks her: 'Nobody likes melodrama, Loita.'

Appearance

A small kua-tin Borant agent with a neck rebreather; in death, blackened and flash-fried, missing her left arm and both lower legs.

Role

The party's genocidal Bloom handler — Carl's first deliberate kill, and the source of the horrifying truth about Zev.

Relationships

Carl — The crawler who assassinates her with the rigged toy and mocks her dying words.
Zev — The young agent whose family the Bloom tortured, as Loita gloats, to force compliance.
The Bloom — The ultranationalist kua-tin movement whose genocidal creed she preaches.
