Reluctant ice-hauler officer with an Earth past, who logged a fatal distress call and lost his ship.
James Holden is a second officer aboard the Canterbury ("the Cant"), a battered ice-hauler running frozen water from Saturn's rings to Ceres. A self-described "clock-puncher," he has spent five years on the ship and turned down two transfers, content to let things stay as they are; Captain McDowell reads him differently, insisting Holden is a natural leader being groomed for bigger things and pressing an XO badge on him over Holden's protests. Holden is from Montana on Earth and carries some unspoken trouble back home — McDowell teases him about being a "wanted man" — and he is sleeping with the Cant's navigator, Ade Nygaard, a fling he keeps deliberately weightless: "there's right now and there's later, why worry about later."
When the Cant intercepts a Mayday from the derelict freighter Scopuli far off the shipping lanes, McDowell wants to ignore it; Ade quietly logs the call anyway, and the company obligation forces a diversion. Made acting XO for the salvage, Holden leads a shuttle team aboard the Knight — Naomi, Amos, Alex, and Shed — to the gutted Scopuli, where they find no bodies, a deliberately shut-down reactor, and a planted transmitter: pirate bait. A stealthed warship appears from nowhere and, as the Knight flees, launches torpedoes — not at the shuttle but at the Canterbury, which is nuked to slag with all hands. Holden's last word to the dying Ade goes unanswered; she is gone, and so is his ship and family. The torpedoes' Martian-grade stealth tech leaves him staring at a catastrophe he cannot yet name.
Second officer (briefly acting XO) of the ice-hauler Canterbury; one of five survivors aboard the shuttle Knight after the Cant is destroyed.
