Alex is the pilot of the ice-hauler Canterbury, a folksy, easy-talking flyer with a drawl and a string of "Hoss" and "y'all" who insists he doesn't want to be on the Scopuli salvage run even as he flies it flawlessly. It is Alex who first picks up the Scopuli's Mayday and confirms the Cant is the only ship within three million clicks. Crewing the shuttle Knight under acting XO Holden, he ferries the boarding party out and, when a stealthed warship materializes from nowhere, disengages and burns clear on command with a cheerful "my pleasure."
His quick flying keeps the Knight alive, but he can only watch as the attacker's torpedoes streak past the shuttle toward the Canterbury and reduce it to slag. Alex is one of the five survivors set adrift in the leaky shuttle after the destruction of their ship.
