Level Collapse

the collapse of this floor

The scheduled end of a floor, used here as a date on the calendar rather than a catastrophe.

Story so far

Odette treats the Level Collapse as an appointment. Leaving after the interview, she tells Carl and Princess Donut that she'll see them upon the collapse of this floor and disappears — the floor's destruction is simply when the next scene between them is scheduled.

Everything else in the chapter is measured against that deadline. Lexis's warning about The Butchers Masquerade concerns what happens before the collapse; Carl's plan to take the stairs early is an attempt to leave ahead of it; and Mordecai's judgement that the town needs one more day to become self-sufficient is a countdown running inside the same window.

Role

The floor's expiry date, and the fixed point every plan in the chapter is timed against.

Relationships

Odette — Sets her next meeting with Carl and Donut for the collapse itself.
Carl — Wants to be down the stairs well before it, and before the masquerade.
The Butchers Masquerade — The event expected to fill the floor's remaining time before it collapses.
