character

Alex Kamal

Alex · Pilot · Sailor · Drone pilot · Battery courier

Alex builds Freehold rapport through batteries, beer, and food while grieving his distance from Kit as history changes.

Story so far

Alex escapes Medina aboard the Rocinante and helps settle the gunship in a hidden Freehold valley. More comfortable among the town's people than Naomi, he walks the six-hour trail, collects depleted batteries, recharges them from the Roci's reactor, and returns them for beer and curried goat. The exchange becomes the fugitives' small local business and a practical basis for goodwill.

At a night fire beneath Freehold's floating vines, Alex assesses the colony cheerfully: its council will eventually betray them, but not soon or cheaply while it likes having them. He looks toward Bobbie's distant moon and wonders which unseen star is Mars. His thoughts settle on Kit, entering adulthood in a history Alex no longer understands and cannot help shape beside him. Naomi reminds him that every generation crosses such a break; their laughter and shared meal make that truth temporarily bearable.

Appearance

An older brown-skinned Martian man with an almost bald head, short beard, newly defined cheekbones, and skin darkened by long walks and alien sunlight.

Role

Alex is the fugitives' social bridge to Freehold, turning shipboard power and ordinary warmth into the local relationships that sustain concealment.

Relationships

Kit Kamal — He grieves being absent as Kit Kamal begins adulthood in a transformed Sol system and accepts that his son must find his own way.
Naomi Nagata — He brings Naomi Nagata food, local news, and companionship while sharing the ache of family left beyond reach.
Freehold — He develops a cottage industry charging Freehold's batteries and learns how long the colony's political goodwill may last.
Rocinante — The Rocinante's reactor powers the battery trade and remains the home to which he returns from town.
