character

Naomi Nagata

Naomi · Engineer · Former XO · Former executive officer of the Rocinante · Belter · Server specialist · Ami Henders · Refugee · Freedom fighter

Hidden on Freehold, Naomi maintains the Rocinante, studies the Storm, and commits to patient resistance until Laconia reveals weakness and she can find Holden.

Story so far

After escaping Medina and losing Clarissa, Naomi brings the Rocinante to an isolated Freehold valley six hours from the colony. She lives mostly aboard the grounded ship, distills creek water for reaction mass, clears local organisms from weapon housings, and endures gravity, skin-irritating biology, grief, and chosen solitude. Freehold accepts her public identity as a refugee and freedom fighter because resistance suits its politics and the Roci's guns strengthen the bargain.

Every day she exchanges coded messages with Bobbie, always embedding “rescue” to indicate safety while Bobbie answers with “progress.” Naomi analyzes datasets from the captured Gathering Storm, learning its calcium dependence, vacuum channels, and alien operating structures. Around a night fire with Alex Kamal, she admits that Holden wanted to show her planetary life and is absent now that she experiences it. Her strategy is endurance: remain small, maintain both ships, build local goodwill, and wait for apparently invincible Laconia to expose the weakness every power eventually reveals.

Appearance

An older long-limbed Belter woman with gray at her temples, deep facial lines, and long dark hair pulled back, wearing a fresh practical jumpsuit after outdoor work under gravity.

Role

Naomi is the hidden resistance strategist and technical bridge between the Rocinante and captured Storm, preserving strength for a future opening.
