character

James Holden

Holden · Jim · Captain Holden · Cap · Former captain of the Rocinante · Resistance strategist · Saboteur · Prisoner · Prisoner 17 · Old ice bucker

Imprisoned on Laconia, Holden confronts Duarte's transformation and learns the empire was built not despite the ancient killers but specifically to wage war against them.

Story so far

Holden reaches Laconia aboard the Lightbreaker and becomes Prisoner 17 under Cortazár's debriefing. In a sunlit cell he finally meets Winston Duarte, immediately perceiving visible changes others sometimes miss and reacting with alarm that the High Consul is using protomolecule-derived treatment on himself.

Holden warns that the bullet on the Tempest belongs to the power that extinguished the gate builders, shut down consciousness across Sol, and may escalate beyond any human survival. Duarte already knows. He reveals that this threat helped inspire the entire Laconian project and argues that humanity could never abandon useful gate technology, leaving only chaotic vulnerability or organized preparation. Duarte asks Holden to help interpret the traces left in his mind and rebuild what the protomolecule civilization lost. Holden sees hubris in attacking powers orders of magnitude above the builders, while Duarte sees the campaign for which an empire exists.

Appearance

An older Earther man with graying hair, bright wide eyes, and an open careworn face, sitting on a cell floor with his back to the wall in simple prison clothes.

Role

Holden is Duarte's captive warning and desired expert, the only person whose mind and memories may connect humanity directly to the ancient extinction.

Relationships

Winston Duarte — He warns Winston Duarte against escalation and discovers that confronting the ancient killers is the ruler's intended purpose rather than an overlooked risk.
Paolo Cortazar — Paolo Cortazar debriefs him as Prisoner 17, searching his answers for significance even Holden may not recognize.
Protomolecule — Duarte perceives Holden's mind as a palimpsest carrying dry traces of the Protomolecule intelligence that once spoke through him.
Naomi Nagata — Naomi Nagata remains hidden on Freehold and determined to find him, while he is held beyond her reach in Duarte's capital.
