Duarte can now perceive patterns of thought, consoles Singh's family, and recruits Holden to help humanity reforge the protomolecule's sword and storm heaven.
Duarte's protomolecule treatment has advanced beyond sleeplessness and rapid healing into altered perception. He sees fields around Teresa, Colonel Ilich, Natalia, Elsa, and Holden that seem to embody thought, attention, grief, and connection. The new sense tempts him to invade privacy, and he restrains it with Singh's family while using it freely against Prisoner 17.
Duarte receives Natalia and Elsa after Santiago's death, honors their loss, guarantees support and an academy place, and witnesses the grief created by his own command. He then meets James Holden. Duarte admits that the ancient killers inspired his seizure of Laconia: useful gate technology was inevitable, renewed attack was therefore inevitable, and only a unified disciplined empire could prepare humanity. He asks Holden to become an ally, help Cortazár recover knowledge from his unique experiences, and reforge the broken protomolecule sword. Holden calls the plan poking gods; Duarte answers that fighting gods requires storming heaven.
An adult male ruler visibly altered enough that Holden reacts with alarm, though the precise physical changes remain undescribed; he carries calm paternal warmth and quietly absolute authority.
Duarte is the transformed architect who defines empire as humanity's instrument for organized war against the power that erased the gate builders.
