Story so far
Still in pain from her escape, Naomi Nagata finally tells James Holden what she has guarded for years: she was Marco's young lover, helped unknowingly with sabotage, had a son named Filip, and lost him when Marco used the child to control her. She also tells Jim that she tried to kill herself, that she killed Cyn during her escape, and how Marco's layered schemes carried her from the Pella to the Chetzemoka. Holden listens without demanding or condemning, and the confession changes secrecy from a grenade in her chest into grief they can hold together.
The relief does not remove Naomi's losses. Cyn is dead, Filip remains abandoned, and Marco still exists as anger and control in the world. But the truth does not break her relationship with Holden, and she wakes focused enough to examine Monica Stuart's records of vanished colony ships. Comparing transits and Free Navy ship signatures with Bobbie's Martian audit, she finds no evidence that Marco's fleet accounts for the colony losses. Her conclusion is colder: something in the Ring gates is eating ships.
