character

Pax

Pax au Augustus · Adept Augustus · the Boy Who Killed a TorchShip

Darrow and Virginia's gifted son embraces accelerated naval training and the burden of becoming a Republic symbol, reconciling with his mother without softening his resolve.

Story so far

Pax is the son of Virginia au Augustus and Darrow, already famous for killing a torchShip and now a student at the Darkstar Conservatory. Six months of the school's discipline have made him taller, harder, and more distant from his mother; its Star Matron has chosen him for an accelerated hunter track. He wears new morphing adept tattoos on his laser-shaved head and greets Virginia first as his Sovereign.

Their visit at last brings the truth beneath their estrangement into speech. Pax asks after Darrow and reasons clearly about the coming war, argues that Valdir should be pardoned, and presses Virginia to seek Quicksilver through Lyria rather than send politicians. When Virginia confesses that she once wished she had delayed bringing him into this violent world, he refuses to inherit her guilt. He names his inheritance struggle and asks her to stop coming back to the school: she must fix her attention on the enemy and win. Their final embrace leaves him still a child she loves, but one deliberately preparing himself to become a warrior.

Appearance

A tall, fast-growing Gold boy with hardened, sunken golden eyes, thin lips, miner-pale skin, and a laser-shaved head. Morphing digital adept tattoos mark his scalp, including the hunter constellation Orion.

Role

Pax is the Republic's heir and a precociously strategic trainee whose voluntary transformation into a warrior crystallizes what the war demands from the next generation.

Relationships

Virginia au Augustus — Virginia is Pax's mother; their honest reunion mends their estrangement even as he asks her to devote herself wholly to the war.
Darrow — Darrow is Pax's absent father, whose uncertain survival and public legend shape Pax's resolve.
Lyria — Lyria is Pax's friend; he sent her toward the Belt because he suspected the machine in her head could lead to Quicksilver's hidden resources.
Valdir — Pax argues that Valdir should be pardoned, reading the Obsidian rebellion as a demand for the freedom the Republic promised.
