Gudmund

Gudmund the Jolly

A joking Volk rescuer who carries Lyria to Volga's ship and is murdered for delivering a friend who will not submit.

Story so far

Gudmund arrives at the Heraklion acropolis with Fenrir, announcing himself as Gudmund the Jolly and refusing to let First Ring Ascomanni make a thing of their lost brother Sigurd. He is a broad, cheerful Obsidian whose appetite and jokes persist even during an invasion; he offers Lyria a choice of arms or back, carries her to the corvette, and keeps eating sausage while the danger around them sharpens.

Gudmund helps sell the necessary deception at Volga's ship, dangling Lyria hogtied below him and claiming the two men found her as valuable lost property. He reassures her that Volga's hunting party is close, but cannot protect her from the command he has entered. After Lyria tells Volga she will not leave without her, Volga displays Gudmund's severed head alongside Fenrir's. His warmth and practical courage become the immediate human cost of Lyria's refusal to give up on her friend.

Appearance

A wide, plump-faced Obsidian man with a beard, a big happy voice, and heavy war gear. He carries an axe, sometimes wears ribbons in his hair, and is repeatedly seen eating sausage despite the danger.

Role

Gudmund is a humane Volk rescuer whose brief kindness gets Lyria to Volga, only for the warlord's camp to consume him.

Relationships

Sigurd — Sigurd calls Gudmund a trusted friend who can deliver Lyria to Volga, and Gudmund honors that promise.
Fenrir — Fenrir is Gudmund's calmer partner in the rescue, and both are killed after they deliver Lyria.
Lyria — Lyria accepts Gudmund's back, corvette ride, and distasteful loot disguise because his help is her only road to Volga.
Volga — Volga's command ends Gudmund's life and uses his head to threaten the woman he saved.
