character

Volga

Queen of the Volk

Volga sends ships to save Io, signs the Covenant in ash, breaks Fá's warsaw before Diomedes, and promises Darrow the strength of her reformed people.

Story so far

Volga arrives at the ruined Garter as a warrior queen in silver warhelm and blue feather mane, but her bald head and ash-covered face publicly carry the shame of Fá's rule. Her ships search for survivors and help the people of Io, while she wisely keeps the armed Obsidians aboard rather than inflame the Rim's fear. Lyria helped persuade her to wear the ash, turning a private burden into a visible commitment to atonement.

At the Covenant meeting, Volga and Diomedes begin with threats: he says she rose by his aid, and she says he lives by her mercy. She disarms the moment by breaking Fá's weakened warsaw over her knee and giving him its tip, making clear that she remembers both its edge and who now holds its grip. Volga signs the treaty that confines the Volk to the asteroid belt and aligns them against the Society. She grieves Cassius despite barely knowing him, promises Lysander will die, and offers Darrow whatever he needs. Her leadership is still unproven, but it is now visibly rooted in responsibility to the people her army harmed.

Appearance

A towering warrior queen, bald and masked in ash, wearing a shining silver warhelm crowned by a mane of blue feathers. The broken hilt of Fá's warsaw rests at her back.

Role

Volga is the elected Queen of the Volk whose practical aid and public shame make the first steps of reconciliation with the Rim possible.

Relationships

Lyria — Lyria convinces Volga to wear the ash of the Volk's shame and remains her closest moral companion.
Diomedes — Diomedes is Volga's wary treaty partner, and the broken warsaw is her pointed acknowledgment of their unresolved history.
Darrow — Darrow is the ally Volga promises to support against Lysander after signing the Covenant.
Cassius — Cassius is the dead warrior Volga respects from Lyria's account and regrets never knowing better.
