Eros's new corporate security contractor, revealed to be staffed by Ceres thugs using stolen Star Helix equipment during the station's emergency lockdown.
Carne Por la Machina, generally called CPM, has recently replaced Protogen as Eros's security contractor. Inspector Sematimba describes it as a Luna-based company whose local force consists mostly of Belters and whose officers are corrupt, amateurish, and more interested in bluster than maintaining order. He expects Eros's governors may refuse to renew its contract.
During Eros's sudden radiological lockdown, Miller recognizes that CPM's armed crowd-control personnel are not merely incompetent. Their armor, batons, and riot guns are familiar Star Helix equipment stolen from Ceres, and one helmeted guard is a man Miller arrested for assault and racketeering a year and a half earlier. The discovery confirms a material link between the stolen Ceres riot gear, Eros's compromised security, and an operation that predates the Scopuli beacon and Julie Mao's disappearance. CPM's men direct frightened residents toward the casino level and supposed radiation shelters, giving the organization control over where the station's population goes.
CPM presents itself through heavily armed station guards in riot armor, helmets, batons, and riot guns; beneath the corporate gear are local recruits, including former Ceres criminals, using equipment stolen from Star Helix.
CPM is the compromised Eros security apparatus that turns a station emergency into evidence of a long-running conspiracy.
