Murderbot unmasks Balin’s buried CombatBot, solves Lutran’s murder, and discovers it may willingly investigate for Preservation again.
The rescue of ten BreharWallHan refugees leaves Lutran’s local killer unknown. Murderbot proposes using a refugee as bait while it builds a surveillance audit, but a spoofed message attributed to Special Investigator Aylen lures it beneath a falling hover crane. A cargo-bot query then exposes the overlooked mechanism: the murderer redirected the bot assigned to Lutran’s module, crossed the station hull, and entered his transport from outside. The only Port Authority machine with the physical access and tools to do that is Balin.
Murderbot evacuates Supervisor Gamila and confronts Balin, whose ordinary carapace conceals military armor and a CombatBot secondary function activated with BreharWallHan codes. It fights the larger machine through Gamila’s office and out onto the dock, damaging its limbs and armor until JollyBaby, Tellus, and dozens of station bots gather in silent opposition. Exposed and outnumbered, Balin shuts itself down. Murderbot’s report reconstructs the whole crime: Balin killed Lutran with its hatch-decoder rods, sterilized the body, sabotaged the transport, moved the corpse by cart, and diverted the refugee module. After medical repair, Murderbot learns Senior Officer Indah never leaked its identity and considers them both defenders on the same side. It accepts a hard-currency payment, agrees to attend musical theater with Dr. Mensah and Ratthi, and leaves open another contract—but only if the next case is really weird.
A lean, androgynous human-derived security construct with generic human features, fine eyebrows, deliberately lengthened short dark hair, and a neck data port, wearing repaired dark-blue security clothing and sturdy boots.
Murderbot solves the murder by combining SecUnit protection, detective analysis, and a willingness to trust humans and bots. The case becomes a genuine civilian success rather than merely another threat to Mensah.
