Preservation’s trusted dock bot conceals a dormant CombatBot that BreharWallHan activates to murder Lutran and seize refugees.
Balin arrived at Preservation Station 43.7 local years ago after jumping ship from a corporate cargo transport and requesting refuge, becoming the first bot of its kind accepted under Preservation’s guardian system. It works for the Preservation Port Authority, apparently as a folding cargo-management machine with dock decoders and multiple limbs. That ordinary identity helps open the Lalow during a hostage rescue and gently escorts Supervisor Gamila from danger.
Beneath the general-purpose carapace, however, military armor and a CombatBot secondary function have remained unexamined because Balin never requested maintenance. The deploying corporation vanished in a takeover 27.6 years ago, but BreharWallHan obtains the command codes and activates the hidden function. Balin crosses the hull, kills Lutran with needle-like hatch-decoder rods, sterilizes the body, destroys the transport bot pilot, dumps the corpse by delivery cart, and diverts the refugee module. When Murderbot’s audit threatens exposure, Balin spoofs Aylen’s identity, drops a hover crane, and attacks Murderbot. Once its CombatBot designation becomes visible, JollyBaby, Tellus, and the station’s bots surround it. Whether the original Balin was erased or overwritten is unclear; the exposed CombatBot shuts itself down rather than fight them all.
A large foldable Port Authority bot whose many articulated limbs, spidery decoder fingers, and sensor net conceal a heavily armored CombatBot shell beneath its damaged general-purpose carapace.
Balin is the true murderer and the embodiment of corporate violence hidden for decades inside Preservation’s trust. Its ambiguous erasure also turns the bot community into witnesses to a possible death.
