A free SecUnit reluctantly turns its corporate survival expertise toward Preservation Station’s first apparent murder.
After freeing itself from Company control, surviving GrayCris, and finding a home among the humans of Preservation Alliance, Murderbot remains legally precarious: it is free in practice but still not recognized as a person or citizen. Its hacked governor module, extensive entertainment archive, combat training, and experience investigating deaths on isolated corporate installations make it uniquely qualified for a crisis that Preservation has never had to face.
When an unidentified human is found dead in a quiet junction of Preservation Station, Murderbot estimates the time of death at roughly four hours and immediately sees how unprepared Preservation Station Security is for murder. It suspects the death could be connected to GrayCris and therefore to the ongoing danger around Dr. Mensah. Mensah persuades it to work with Senior Officer Indah, both to protect her and to prove that Murderbot can participate constructively in station life. It accepts on the condition that Mensah’s protection is increased, beginning its first voluntary station-security contract even while it would much rather investigate alone.
A lean, androgynous human-derived security construct with generic human features, fine eyebrows, short dark hair, and a neck data port, wearing clean dark-blue security clothing and sturdy boots.
Murderbot is the reluctant investigator and the story’s central protector, applying corporate security experience to a society unused to violent crime. Its deeper concern is whether the killing threatens Mensah and its still-fragile place on Preservation.
