Story so far

Princess Formidable had given Katia Grim The Bolt of Ophiotaurus ostensibly as a weapon against Prince Maestro. After the fight, Carl told Katia that firing it would have been a waste — Maestro was right that they couldn't have hurt him with it — and that he was fairly certain Formidable's real purpose in handing it over was to send a message to her brother rather than to actually get them to kill him. The bolt therefore remains unspent, held for a future target.
