Story so far
At a UN reception on Luna, Prax sits at the Rocinante crew's central table with the ever-clinging Mei (who deposits chewed spaghetti in Amos's hand and jams a wet finger in her father's ear). Watching Earthers, Martians, and Belters self-segregate into political and scientific cliques, he realizes the shattered, reassembling society of Ganymede is both his past and his future. He answers Holden and Naomi's pointed question about low-gravity childbearing — naturally, five of six such pregnancies show abnormalities, though Ganymede's genetic pre-screening cuts non-germline risk to only twice Earth's — leaving Holden crestfallen.
He confirms to Bobbie he'll take Avasarala's offer to lead Ganymede's rebuild, growing giddy on the theme: to rebuild is to refine what was learned, and catastrophe is only ever a prelude to what comes next. The reception is shattered when news breaks: Fred Johnson has nuked all of Nguyen's tracked monsters in the Belt, flexing Belter muscle. Then a live feed silences the room — from Venus, a vast glowing tentacled structure larger than Ganymede rises through the clouds, scatters the watching ships, and launches itself away from the sun into the void under no visible drive.
Prax stands frozen as Mei pats his cheek and asks, 'What's that?'
