character

Fred Johnson

Holden's OPA former boss Fred Johnson nukes all of Nguyen's tracked monsters in the Belt — a show of force flexing the Belt's new offensive arsenal.

Story so far

Fred Johnson, the OPA leader and Holden's former employer, seizes the moment while Earth and Mars wait for Nguyen's tracked monster 'packages' to drift close to Mars for disposal. As the swarm crosses into the Belt, Fred nukes all of them at once. Avasarala reads it not as mere cleanup but as muscle-flexing — a public demonstration that the Belt now possesses an offensive arsenal and will act on its own authority, beating Earth to the punch.

His stunt reframes the war's end as a shift in the balance of power among Earth, Mars, and the Outer Planets, and lands just before the Venus feed upends everything.

Appearance

Not seen in person here; known through news of his decisive strike — the OPA's 'Butcher of Anderson Station' turned unelected Belt statesman.

Role

OPA leader who destroys the monster swarm as a show of the Belt's new offensive power.

Relationships

Avasarala — The strategist who reads his strike as Belt muscle-flexing rather than simple disposal.
Holden — His former captain-employee, whose reaction to 'my boss' the news prompts.
Ganymede monster — The tracked swarm he nukes wholesale in the Belt.
