The narrator is a SecUnit that privately calls itself Murderbot, part machine and part cloned tissue, secretly free since it hacked its own governor module. Rented to PreservationAux, eight Preservation Alliance surveyors led by Dr. Mensah, it drifted through twenty-two dull days until a tunneling animal took Dr. Bharadwaj out of a crater; it tore her free losing an arm and a fifth of its body mass, and blew its cover unsealing its helmet to calm Dr. Volescu. That rescue exposed sabotage: a deleted hazard subreport, six sections missing from the satellite map, a failing autopilot. When DeltFall Group across the ocean went silent, Mensah flew out with Pin-Lee, Overse, Ratthi, and the SecUnit and found eleven humans slaughtered by DeltFall's own SecUnits, fitted with combat override modules that make a construct a puppet. It destroyed two, took a module in its own port, and shot itself rather than be used; Pin-Lee and Overse cut it out, while Gurathin exposed the hacked governor module and the fifty-seven mining clients it killed when a cheap governor module malfunctioned. Mensah promised secrecy and asked it to stay. They shut down the compromised HubSystem, found their beacon smashed, abandoned the habitat, and hid in jungle cliffs, where drone footage named the enemy: GrayCris. The SecUnit baited them away from their base so Gurathin and Pin-Lee could reach the GrayCris beacon on foot, shrugging off the pulse meant to freeze a governor module it no longer has and trading the truth about Gurathin for passage off-planet as destroyed inventory. When GrayCris grabbed for Mensah instead, it killed the unit sent to kill it, swapped armor with the corpse, and walked her in as its prisoner, learning that the blank map regions hide alien remnants GrayCris means to strip before an interdict lands. The beacon fired far too close; it took a round through the thigh, tackled Mensah off the plateau, shielded her head from the fire, and went to pieces as the pickup transport took them aboard. It woke in an old cubicle at the company station, governor module still broken, media intact, to Ratthi announcing that Mensah has permanently bought its contract, and to a news feed in which the company has become PreservationAux's heroic rescuer. Pin-Lee walked it out past techs demanding the standard memory purge, waving a court order. In a gray survey uniform instead of armor, it crossed the station's human levels and found that with its inorganic parts covered nobody looked twice. Mensah offered it Preservation: no cubicle, nobody shooting at it, repairs in a medical center, education, and herself as guardian rather than owner, a nicer word for the same shape. Ratthi described her farm full of partners, siblings, and children. It also downloaded a station map and shift schedules.

Right now the SecUnit is aboard a bot-driven cargo transport pulling away from the station, and nobody it loves knows. It waited out the offshift, walked out of the suite, stole boots, a jacket, an enviro mask, and a knapsack from dockworkers' lockers, and crossed the embarkation zone as one more augmented human. The ship was bored, so it paid its passage in hundreds of hours of saved shows. What it is running from is not cruelty but kindness: on that farm it would have to pass as human, give up the armor, and let a guardian decide, however gently, what it becomes. It has left Mensah a message saying so: it does not know what it wants, and will not be told. Out of inventory and out of sight, it is free and entirely alone with no idea what comes next.
